Human resources in health: Burkina Faso leads Francophone Africa

Burkina Faso has risen to first place in Francophone Africa and fifth globally for the availability of data on health workers, according to the WHO. The country received a certificate of recognition from the WHO Regional Office for Africa at the annual technical meeting on human resources for health, held from August 17 to 21 in Johannesburg.

Burkina Faso's score increased from 89% to 93%, placing the country second in Africa behind the top continental ranking and fifth globally.

This performance rewards the efforts undertaken to improve the collection, consolidation, and updating of data on healthcare personnel. This information allows for better planning of recruitment, training, assignments, and the distribution of staff according to the needs of the population.

Represented in Johannesburg by the Director of Human Resources of the Ministry of Health, Mamadou Traoré, Burkina Faso also shared its experience with other African countries.

The next challenge is now to maintain this data quality and, above all, to make it a true decision-making tool to strengthen the health system.
