The partnership between Bamako and Moscow continues to grow. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Malian President General Assimi Goïta spoke by telephone on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the initiative of the Russian side.
During the meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations between Mali and Russia and enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The situation in the Sahel region and security issues were also central to their discussions.
This new high-level consultation confirms the momentum established between Bamako and Moscow. Russian-Malian cooperation has gradually developed in several sectors, with particular attention paid to security, but also to energy, infrastructure, transport, agriculture, and training.
The two countries now have several consultation frameworks designed to facilitate the implementation of their joint projects. In particular, the Mali-Russia Joint Intergovernmental Commission is an important instrument for deepening economic and technical exchanges.
Through this interview, Vladimir Putin and Assimi Goïta reaffirm a common desire to make Russian-Malian cooperation an ever stronger, more diversified partnership oriented towards the interests of both countries.
