Equatorial Guinea: Malabo relies on solar power to strengthen its electricity grid

Equatorial Guinea aims to increase its electricity production by relying more heavily on solar power. A project valued at $150 million envisions the construction of several photovoltaic power plants to supply the national grid.

The project, led by the Chinese company Beijing Weineng, has received approval from the Equatorial Guinean authorities. The electricity produced will be sold to the Equatorial Guinea Electricity Company (SEGESA), which will then integrate it into the national grid.

Beyond the construction of power plants, the challenge is to strengthen the capacity of the electricity system. The country is currently working on a new master plan for its electricity sector, with planning extending to 2040. This approach aims, in particular, to adapt production to the needs of households and industries and to increase the share of renewable energies in the energy mix.

Solar power thus complements the other energy sources already used by Equatorial Guinea. The country is also seeking to develop electricity exchanges with its neighbors. An interconnection with Gabon, in particular, has been operational since 2025, facilitating electricity exchanges between the two grids.

The $150 million project is therefore part of a broader effort to strengthen and diversify the country's electricity supply.
