KENYA: Ruto wants to drive foreigners out of small businesses

In Kenya, the government is preparing to tighten controls on foreign nationals involved in street vending and retail activities. Starting September 7th, inspections will be launched in street vending and retail trade, with President William Ruto's stated objective of reserving these sectors for Kenyan nationals.

The head of state specifically mentioned Chinese traders, whose presence has fueled criticism from some local stakeholders. Nairobi believes that foreign investors should prioritize activities that create jobs and boost production rather than compete with local vendors.

This approach is part of a broader effort to strengthen the role of Kenyan nationals in the economy. The Local Content Bill, currently under consideration by Parliament, also aims to increase Kenyan participation in foreign companies, particularly through local employment and procurement.

September 7 will thus mark the beginning of a control operation that could reshuffle the cards in local commerce in Kenya.
