Burkina Faso–UN: Ouagadougou wants cooperation that serves its national priorities

Burkina Faso wants cooperation with the United Nations that is more focused on its national priorities and, above all, capable of producing concrete results for the population. This was the main message delivered by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo during his meeting on Monday, August 31, 2026, with the new Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Burkina Faso, Njoya Tikum.

Njoya Tikum, also appointed Humanitarian Coordinator and Security Officer, was received in audience by the Head of Government for an initial meeting. Discussions focused on the future of cooperation between Burkina Faso and the United Nations system.

At the heart of the discussions: the new Burkina Faso-United Nations Cooperation Framework. For the Government, its implementation must be fully consistent with the RELANCE 2026-2030 Plan, now presented as the new national development framework.
The objective is clear: to better coordinate the interventions of UN agencies so that they respond more closely to the needs and guidelines defined by the Burkinabe authorities.

During the hearing, the Prime Minister stressed a major requirement: international cooperation must translate into concrete effects in the daily lives of people.
He therefore called for prioritizing “effective” interventions, better coordinated and capable of generating a real and lasting impact on the living conditions of Burkinabe people.

Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo also reaffirmed Burkina Faso's willingness to maintain a constructive dialogue with its partners, while insisting on respect for national sovereignty, the country's strategic choices and the aspirations of the Burkinabè people.

For his part, the new Resident Coordinator assured the United Nations System of its readiness to support Burkina Faso in the implementation of its national priorities.
“We reaffirm the readiness of the entire United Nations system to support Burkina Faso, in accordance with its priorities,” said Njoya Tikum.

The UN official also advocated for better coordination among the various United Nations agencies present in Burkina Faso. He believes this approach should streamline efforts and better direct resources towards the country's development objectives.

This first meeting between the Head of Government and the new Resident Coordinator thus sets the tone for a cooperation that both parties wish to be more coherent, better coordinated and more results-oriented, in line with the ambitions of the RELANCE 2026-2030 Plan.
