In Ouagadougou, selling chicken eggs for more than 100 CFA francs can now be costly for vendors. A joint operation conducted this Thursday, August 13, by the inspection services caught several vendors red-handed engaging in price gouging and illegal pricing practices.
The mission brought together the Mobile Brigade for Economic Control and Fraud Repression (BMCRF), the Laabal Brigade, the veterinary services of the Ministry of Agriculture as well as the national gendarmerie.
The shopkeepers who were inspected and found to be in violation were fined. Some were also taken by the Laabal Brigade to perform community service.
The BMCRF reminds consumers that the regulated price is set at 3,000 CFA francs per carton, or 100 CFA francs per egg. Merchants who charge a higher price are therefore subject to penalties.
This operation comes at a time when food prices are under increased scrutiny. Authorities aim to prevent speculative practices and ensure compliance with regulated prices.
