The President of the Republic is now required to declare and publish his assets upon taking office and leaving office. The constitutional reform was unanimously adopted yesterday by the members of parliament.
Before this reform, the head of state was only required to declare their assets at the beginning of their term. The new legislation also extends this obligation to the president of the National Assembly and the prime minister.
The bill put forward by Pastef stipulates that this declaration must be filed with the Constitutional Council within three months of taking office, and then again within three months of leaving office.
"This reform marks an important step forward in consolidating the principles of transparency, integrity and good governance in the management of public affairs," the chamber wrote.
On the executive side, the reform is also expected to affect the conditions for candidacy in the presidential election. Indeed, the minister announced a new proposal from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to make asset declarations a mandatory part of the candidacy file.
