Niger: The government is preparing for the start of the school year with more than 2,000 tons of school supplies.

With just over two weeks until the start of the school year, Niger is accelerating preparations for its schools. On Monday, September 14, 2026, in Niamey, the government launched the shipment of more than 2,000 tons of school supplies to five regions, with the aim of ensuring that students have their materials ready for the start of classes, scheduled for October 1, 2026.

Around ten trucks left the warehouses of the Niger Food Products Office (OPVN) in the Gamkalé district, heading towards Maradi, Zinder, Agadez, Diffa and Tahoua. The kits were distributed among these regions according to their needs.

This first wave includes notebooks, pens, slates, geometry sets, and chalk. A second wave will supplement the supplies with the delivery of textbooks, as in the previous school year.

For the Minister of National Education, Literacy and Language Promotion, Dr. Elisabeth Shérif, this early deployment should allow school officials to have supplies on time and prevent their distribution from delaying the effective start of teaching.

The operation also reflects the authorities' desire to improve the management of school time. The ministry intends to emphasize punctuality and attendance for both teachers and students, in order to guarantee a higher quality school year.
