Mali and Senegal reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the face of security, economic, and regional challenges on Tuesday, July 28, in Bamako. During a working and solidarity visit to Mali, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye met with Malian Transitional President General Assimi Goïta to discuss key issues affecting both countries and the sub-region.
During this visit, the two heads of state held a private meeting before chairing working sessions with their respective delegations. Discussions focused primarily on the fight against terrorism, strengthening bilateral cooperation, and prospects for regional integration.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed Senegal's solidarity with the Malian people following the recent terrorist attacks. He offered his country's condolences, condemned the acts as "cowardly and barbaric," and commended Mali's efforts to preserve peace and security.
The two leaders emphasized that the terrorist threat transcends national borders and stressed the need for strengthened cooperation among Sahelian states. Senegal reaffirmed its readiness to support Mali in its efforts to address security challenges and contribute to regional stability.
Discussions also focused on strengthening cooperation mechanisms within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) and the Senegal River Basin Development Organization (OMVS). The two heads of state agreed to continue consultations in preparation for an upcoming summit dedicated to monetary and economic cooperation and the joint management of water resources.
This visit, under the banner of fraternity and dialogue, demonstrates the desire of Mali and Senegal to consolidate their partnership in order to jointly address common challenges and promote stability and sustainable development in West Africa.
