Faced with security and economic challenges, Mali and Niger have demonstrated their commitment to strengthening their united front within the Confederation of Sahel States (AES). In Niamey on November 5, 2026, Presidents Assimi Goïta and Abdourahamane Tiani reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying the fight against terrorism and accelerating cooperation among member states.
On an official visit to Niger at the invitation of his counterpart, the Malian head of state met with Army General Abdourahamane Tiani to discuss the main challenges facing the confederation. The discussions, initially held privately and then with both delegations present, focused primarily on security, diplomacy, and development.
On the security front, the two leaders commended the results attributed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the fight against terrorism. They reaffirmed their commitment to continuing operations until this threat is eradicated and condemned attempts to destabilize the countries of the Swiss Confederation.
Beyond military considerations, Goïta and Tiani also intend to give greater substance to Sahelian integration. The free movement of people and goods, transport infrastructure, agribusiness, and the development of mineral and energy resources are among the priorities mentioned.
The two heads of state also welcomed the diplomatic coordination of the ESA, which they consider a lever for strengthening its influence on the regional and international stages.
Following the meeting, Assimi Goïta invited his Nigerien counterpart to pay an official visit to Mali. Abdourahamane Tiani accepted this invitation, the date of which will be set through diplomatic channels.
This meeting reflects the desire of Bamako and Niamey to consolidate their cooperation and to provide a common response to the challenges of the confederal space.
