The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) intends to strengthen its support for Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger in environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. The organization plans, in particular, to better coordinate its interventions in the three countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
This orientation was at the heart of an audience granted on Friday, October 23, 2026 in Ouagadougou, by the Burkinabe Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, accompanied by the Minister Delegate Bebgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabré/Kaboré, to the IUCN Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Balla Moussa Sidibé.
On this occasion, the regional director and his delegation expressed their gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the support provided to the organization in carrying out its missions in Burkina Faso. They also reaffirmed their commitment to contributing to environmental protection through resource mobilization and the provision of expertise.
The discussions allowed the Burkinabe Foreign Minister to provide guidance aimed at strengthening the relevance of IUCN interventions in Burkina Faso and within the AES confederation. The objective is to foster joint responses to the environmental challenges facing the three countries and to promote sustainable solutions for preserving natural resources.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs welcomed this regional coordination initiative and reaffirmed his department's willingness to continue collaborating with the organization.
Present in Burkina Faso since 1990, the IUCN supports the country in particular in land restoration, water management, strengthening the resilience of production systems as well as the development of value chains and employment in rural areas.
