During the night of September 9-10, 2026, agents from the Burkinabe Agency for Standardization, Metrology and Quality (ABNORM) carried out a series of unannounced inspections in several bakeries in the cities of Ouagadougou and Bobo.
The objective was to verify that the baguette sold to consumers complied with the regulatory weight set at 160 grams. And the results are worrying.
Of the 33 bakeries inspected, 11 were found to be failing to comply with the legal weight of the bread. In other words, in several establishments, the consumer was not receiving exactly what they were paying for.
Faced with these findings, ABNORM took decisive action. The 11 bakeries in question were ordered to immediately suspend production.
The sanctioned bakeries will only be able to resume their activities after they have effectively corrected the non-conformities found.
Those responsible will have to provide evidence that the problems have been resolved and pay the fines stipulated by the applicable regulations.
