Niger aims to better regulate online media activity and the presence of foreign press within its borders. Two draft texts to this effect were adopted on Thursday, September 10, 2026, by the Council of Ministers.
The first text specifically concerns electronic media. It notably includes rules on the identification of publishers, the responsibilities of editorial managers, and the regulation of online content.
Disinformation, fake news and hate speech are also among the content targeted by this new framework.
The second project concerns foreign press correspondents and foreign media outlets operating in Niger. It defines the conditions for accessing the activity, as well as the procedures for granting, renewing, and withdrawing accreditations.
The National Communication Observatory (ONC) will play a role in this system. In particular, it will be responsible for providing reasoned opinions in accreditation procedures and issuing professional cards to foreign press correspondents and visiting foreign journalists.
Through these two texts, the Nigerien authorities intend to establish more precise rules for a media sector that has evolved significantly with the development of digital press and the multiplication of content broadcast on online platforms.
The projects will still have to follow the planned procedure before their possible entry into force.
