South African lawyer Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, 85, is the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Her career has been marked by the defense of human rights, the fight against impunity, and the prosecution of alleged perpetrators of international crimes. Notably, she led a UN commission of inquiry that accused Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee highlighted her commitment to international justice. Its chairman, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, praised the lawyer's role in efforts to bring to justice those responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, emphasizing her courage and integrity.
For the Committee, respect for international law is a major issue in a global context marked by the proliferation of armed conflicts. This distinction is intended to highlight the role of justice in preventing impunity and defending peace.
Born in Durban, South Africa, to a family of Indian Tamil origin, Navi Pillay grew up under the apartheid regime. From a young age, she used law as a tool to fight discrimination. In 1967, she became the first woman to open a law firm in the province of Natal. Throughout her career, she defended anti-apartheid activists, denounced acts of torture, and contributed to securing rights for the detainees of Robben Island.
After teaching at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, she joined the South African judiciary in 1995, at the end of apartheid, as a substitute judge on the Supreme Court. Her career then led her to the international judicial stage: she served on the International Criminal Court from 2003 to 2008, before holding the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights between 2008 and 2014.
Navi Pillay becomes the second African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, after Kenyan Wangari Maathai, awarded in 2004. She also joins the South African personalities already distinguished: Albert Lutuli in 1960, Desmond Tutu in 1984, then Nelson Mandela and Frederik de Klerk, jointly awarded in 1993.
