On the occasion of World Habitat Day, celebrated this Monday, October 5, 2026, under the theme "Adequate Housing for All," the Burkinabe government reaffirms its commitment to improving access to housing and better organizing urban development. The Minister of State Construction, Mikaïlou Sidibé, notably announced plans to increase the housing supply, restructure informal settlements, and optimize land use.
This policy must in particular be based on the Burkina Faso Deenw Ka Soow program, dedicated to increasing the supply of housing, as well as on PRO-REST-APUR, intended for the restructuring of spontaneous housing and the clearing of land liabilities.
The government also intends to strengthen the development of secondary cities to make them more hubs of production and opportunity. The approach aims to bring housing, secure land, infrastructure, and urban services closer together.
According to the minister, approximately 600 homes have already been built with the support of UN-Habitat for the benefit of vulnerable communities affected by the security crisis.
New initiatives must accompany urban development and the construction of infrastructure in certain secondary cities.
Another stated priority is to build housing better suited to the country's realities. The ministry wants to promote local materials, national skills, and construction that takes into account the effects of climate change, energy efficiency, and stormwater management.
Mikaïlou Sidibé finally calls on communities, businesses, financial institutions, building professionals, researchers and development partners to contribute to this ambition, in order to gradually make decent housing accessible to the greatest number.
