Niger: Millet and sorghum prices are falling again on the markets

Prices for the main local cereals have seen a slight decrease in Niger. According to data from the Agricultural Market Information System (SIMA), the average price of a 100 kg bag of millet fell by 1%, from 22,987 to 22,724 FCFA, while that of sorghum fell by 2%, from 19,564 to 19,232 FCFA, during the week of September 2-8, 2026.

This increase is linked in particular to the gradual arrival of the first harvests, the destocking of goods by traders, and the sales at reduced prices conducted by the Niger Food Products Office (OPVN). Targeted free distributions by certain partners also contribute to increasing availability.

In Niamey, the price drop is more pronounced for millet, with a decrease of 5%. A 100 kg bag sells for between 22,000 and 22,500 FCFA. For sorghum, prices have fallen by 2%, with transactions ranging between 17,500 and 19,000 FCFA.

However, significant price differences remain between localities. A sack of millet costs approximately 33,000 FCFA in Iférouane, compared to 16,000 FCFA in Tchadaoua. For sorghum, the price varies from 14,000 FCFA in Gazaoua to 26,400 FCFA in Agadez, due in particular to distances from production areas and transportation costs.

Corn, however, remains virtually stable: its average national price has risen from 18,305 to 18,324 FCFA per 100 kg bag. In Niamey, it is trading between 15,000 and 16,000 FCFA.
Imported rice prices also remain almost stable. The 25 kg bag has increased from 11,475 to 11,512 FCFA nationally, while in Niamey it remains at 11,000 FCFA.
