The Burkinabe state is taking action. The government has announced a large-scale operation to recover its debts, estimated at over 107,3 billion FCFA.

The announcement was made this Friday, April 17, 2026 in Ouagadougou by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, in charge of monitoring the cases through the State Judicial Agent (AJE).
According to the authorities, this portfolio is composed of several types of claims: unpaid checks, bank debts inherited from the restructuring of the financial sector, ordinary claims, amounts from court decisions and debts of state entities.
Bounced checks represent the largest share, amounting to nearly 34 billion FCFA. They affect several banks and public services. Cases of fraud involving shell companies and public officials are mentioned.

Bank receivables and other debts inherited from previous financial restructurings amount to approximately 20 billion FCFA. Receivables from state-owned entities, however, exceed 46 billion FCFA.
Faced with this situation, the government has announced a firm response. Notices of collection and formal demands for payment will be sent. Seizures of assets, business closures, and home visits are also planned.

Debtors are given eight days to regularize their situation with the Public Treasury.
After this period, the authorities promise to launch forced recovery procedures, without exception.
