In Nigeria, an alleged attempt to bribe soldiers has led to the arrest of a political figure suspected of links to ISWAP. Alhaji Wakiil Goni Mama, also known as Mai Salati, is accused of offering money to soldiers to secure the release of suspects arrested in Kanamma, Yobe State.
The case involves possible support for the logistical networks of the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP), which is active in the northeast of the country. The suspects in question were arrested as part of investigations into their alleged involvement in supplying terrorist groups.
According to reports in several Nigerian media outlets, Mai Salati allegedly attempted to intervene on behalf of the detainees by offering money to the soldiers. The soldiers reportedly refused the offer before proceeding with her arrest.
The politician is himself suspected of collaborating with ISWAP and contributing to its logistical support. After his arrest, he was transferred to Maiduguri, in the neighboring state of Borno, along with the other suspects, for further investigation.
Investigators must now establish the nature of the links between those arrested and the alleged support networks for the terrorist group. Mai Salati's responsibility remains to be determined by the courts.
