Togo is still reeling from the torrential rains that struck the country on June 28 and 29. While the waters have receded, they have left behind grieving families and thousands of people affected.

On Saturday, July 4, the government released an initial assessment. In a statement, it reported a provisional death toll of five, significant material damage, and major traffic disruptions in several regions of the country.

"A comprehensive assessment of damages and needs is still underway in order to fully measure the impact of this disaster," the government stated.

According to the authorities, these rains, of an intensity rarely seen in the recent history of the countries of the Gulf of Guinea, have particularly affected the Maritime, Plateaux, Central regions as well as the Autonomous District of Greater Lomé, where relief and assessment operations are continuing.

While offering its condolences to the bereaved families, the government assures that relief operations, assistance to the population and securing of at-risk areas are continuing in order to promote a rapid return to normal living conditions.
