The cyber threat has even reached supermarket shelves. Across Europe, cybercriminals have targeted the refrigeration systems of commercial establishments.
Their modus operandi
During the night, hackers modified the settings of the refrigeration systems, causing temperatures to rise as high as 70 degrees in refrigerators and freezers.
This disruption compromised the maintenance of the cold chain, exposing foodstuffs to risks of deterioration and contamination.
Supermarket chains in Belgium, Sweden, Estonia, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Romania, Ireland and Germany were affected.
So far no one has claimed responsibility for either of these waves of cyberattacks.
