Extortion and harassment on the roads are now the subject of an unambiguous directive within the National Gendarmerie. Any behavior deemed inappropriate by officers may result in disciplinary sanctions, as well as criminal prosecution.
On September 16, 2026, the Chief of Staff of the National Gendarmerie, Colonel Issa Yaguiibou, visited the Mogtédo Territorial Brigade to raise awareness among personnel about corruption and illicit practices during roadside checks. He specifically asked them to demonstrate integrity, probity, and discipline in the performance of their duties.
The head of the Gendarmerie also called on officers to renounce illicit gains and avoid any practice of seeking personal advantage in the performance of their duties. He emphasized the need to adopt rigorous financial management and live within their means.
The measure does not only concern the Mogtédo brigade. The commanders of the six Gendarmerie legions and the group commanders conducted similar sessions in their respective jurisdictions. The objective is to implement the same approach in brigades and road checkpoints throughout the country.
Through this initiative, the Gendarmerie aims to strengthen discipline within its ranks and address the practices that fuel complaints from road users. The message to personnel is now clear: observed misconduct may result in administrative sanctions and legal proceedings.
