Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has decided to officially support Senegal's candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). This decision was announced following a meeting between the two men, held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at the Presidential Palace.
According to a statement from the Senegalese Ministry of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Macky Sall had gone to see the Head of State to present his candidacy for the head of the UN.
The Senegalese authorities indicate that the meeting took place in a climate of cordiality and republican courtesy, illustrating President Bassirou Diomaye Faye's desire to prioritize dialogue, the continuity of the State and rallying around the higher interests of the country.
Following this meeting, the Head of State instructed the government and the entire Senegalese diplomatic network to take the necessary steps to promote Macky Sall's candidacy to the member states of the United Nations.
The Senegalese president also called on the nation's vital forces to support this candidacy, which he now presents as that of Senegal, in service to Africa and strengthened multilateralism.
