Burkina Faso met 126,4% of its cereal needs for the 2025-2026 agricultural season, according to the Minister of State for Agriculture, Ismaël Sombié. This result demonstrates the country's production capacity, but the authorities intend to consolidate these gains through innovation and the modernization of agricultural value chains.
In his message on the occasion of the 46th World Food Day, celebrated around the theme "Innovating for sustainable food sovereignty", the minister called on the people of Burkina Faso to make innovation an essential lever to strengthen national food autonomy.
The new phase of the 2026-2028 agricultural, livestock, water, and fisheries offensive focuses in particular on water management, irrigation development, dam rehabilitation, and the strengthening of hydro-agricultural infrastructure. The objective is to sustainably increase production and reduce the effects of climate risks.
For Ismaël Sombié, this dynamic must also include seed improvement, livestock modernization, product preservation, local processing, and the reduction of food losses. He also emphasized the role of women and youth in this transformation, particularly through training, entrepreneurship, and access to factors of production.
The minister finally called on producers, researchers, processors, entrepreneurs and partners to join forces to build a more productive and resilient food system, capable of sustainably feeding the Burkinabe population.
